#SCBDReview: Shore Fresh Seafood Market & Restaurant

I happened upon Shore Fresh when I took a day trip down the shore one cloudy and chilly Friday with my best friend. Because of the unfavorable beach weather, my best friend and I spent most of the day at a beach bar. At one point, we were talking about craving buffalo calamari (that in itself is another story); the bartender overheard us and recommended Shore Fresh, as it was the only seafood restaurant in Point Pleasant that she knew had the dish.

Right on the water at the inlet in Point Pleasant Beach, Shore Fresh has fresh seafood brought in by boat everyday – and that makes all the difference in the quality of their seafood. My friend and I split the buffalo calamari appetizer, then I ordered the shrimp and scallops fra diablo and my friend had the lobster roll.

The buffalo calamari was far better than any other I’d had before (which was usually the boardwalk at Seaside Heights – no offense guys!) I usually have low expectations for calamari because of how rubbery it tends to get, but Shore Fresh’s calamari was succulent and full-flavored, prepared lightly breaded, fried, and tossed in just the right amount of buffalo sauce.

The shrimp and scallosp fra diablo was served right out of the pan they cooked it in. (I wasn’t sure whether or not to consider it lazy or charming, but I give them props for a unique style.) In any case, the scallops were cooked perfectly, and the shrimp near perfect (there were one or two that could have used a little less time on the stove). The dish as a whole was incredibly satisfying, complete with penne pasta (a special request on my part, because it’s my favorite), and a great spicy marinara with a good amount of garlic. Shore Fresh hit every mark on my checklist for a good Italian dish.

I wish I could comment on my best friend’s entrée, but he finished his lobster roll before I could ask to steal a bite. Ultimately, he had only good things to say, so that will be my next meal there once I get back down the shore.

If you’re a seafood lover like me, you will be greatly impressed with the quality of food at Shore Fresh. That quality extends to their market, where they sell fresh seafood, seafood salads, and other prepared foods, and they also offer catering for parties and events. What began as a cold and cloudy afternoon down the shore turned into a great dining experience and made the hour drive down the parkway totally worth it!
