This summer I was incredibly fortunate to go on a few trips such as a weekend in Philly and Vermont. I also went on my first cruise the week of the 4th of July for a family reunion. The cruise was a 3 day cruise on the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas. I actually am not sure if I’d want to go on a cruise again after the experience but I might be open to trying another cruise ship company. Maybe my expectations were too high? I’m sure my motion sickness didn’t help either.
My dad’s side of the family always tries to plan a family reunion at least once a year and this year it was a family cruise. Of course, me who can’t say no to a trip or an adventure decided to go. I went with my dad and my step-mom and we met up in Miami with the rest of the family July 5th to board the cruise ship. I knew when my motion sickness got the best of the me on the airplane ride in, it would be rocky trip but I didn’t let it stop me from enjoying the trip as much as possible. As I mentioned the cruise was only three days long so I knew it would be over before I knew it. Between our early morning plane ride and my lack of sleep before the trip (my dad wanted to pull an all-nighter by going to AC the night before our early flight) the only thing I wanted to do was take a nap so that I did after lunch and meeting up with some family before our late dinner time which was late at 9pm.
I woke up around 4pm, hungry of course so I went to the Johnny Rockets on the ship and was pretty impressed. The view was also nice and the prices were decent. I went with the special ’12’ burger they had on board. I stayed up after my snack that as long as I could until dinner and got to spend time with the family and enjoy a few cocktails. Unfortunately by the time we had dinner at 9pm, the ship was really rocky and still wasn’t feeling great so I had to leave dinner early. But I was able to see what and eat some of what came out of the kitchen. All of the dishes were an A+ on presentation but I thought from what I ate that some of the food was dry and a little lacking in the flavor department. I really wasn’t impressed and was confused that my Johnny Rockets could’ve been better.
I must say my bed on the cruise was very comfortable since I ended up sleeping in it so much. I woke up feeling better the next day, after about 12 hours of sleep since I didn’t make our entire dinner due to my motion sickness. I liked all the breakfast options on the boat, if you woke up early you could have their sit-down breakfast, which was the only option the last day or the breakfast buffet. My family and I went for the buffet everyday but the last day. They had an omelette bar which was great, tons of options which were appealing to both an American and International palate. It had to be my favorite meal on the ship since I always had it and enjoyed it.
Our first stop that day was Royal Caribbean’s own island, CocoCay in the Bahamas. The boat was parked in the middle of the ocean, somewhere safe so we had to take a waverunner that would take us to their secluded island. It was a great relaxing day, I was able to tan, read and relax. I was even able to wear my bikini from Just Beautiful Boutique that day! The cocktails they had were great and I even had the signature Coco Loco cocktail which was delicious but the food was decent on the island. They had a barbecue which was typical American barbecue, not exactly what a foodie wants to eat when she travelled all the way to the Bahamas.
We got back from the island pretty early, early enough for me to go to the buffet on board and try to eat a bit. Going on the cruise made me realize how much eating dinner between 6-8pm is down pat in my body clock. It was basically a repeat of the night before– some cocktails with the family, maybe a nap, but by the time dinner came around the ship was even worse than the night before and apparently I wasn’t the only person who left dinner early. That night was also formal night so I was all dressed up luckily I didn’t get sick until we got into the dining room which was after a cocktail reception and family pictures.
Before we left for the trip, my dad made sure he got medicine just in case any of us got motion sickness. So I decided after being frustrated with my motion sickness that I’d take it or use it in this case. He had Sea Band’s which are known for being a natural remedy for motion sickness. In order for them to be effective you have to put one band on each arm (they come 2 in each box) and then just follow the instructions so that the Nei-Kuan point is centered accordingly and then your good to go. Anytime you get nauseous you just press on the point and it’s supposed to make it better. Since it was late and I was beat from feeling so nauseous I slept with the bands on that night and felt better.
The next day of course was our last full day on the ship and our destination was also Nassau, Bahamas. I went to breakfast at the buffet that morning but felt myself, finally. With my bands on each arm we were off to explore Nassau with the family. If you love fashion you’ll love Nassau. I got some cute tops and nail polish from Del Sol. All of their products change color in the sun which I love. It was bit pricey but you can’t get anywhere on the East Coast. We ate at Senior Frog’s before we left Nassau which was great, I really enjoyed the drink and the food was good– nothing special. I was really hoping to eat somewhere local but since we were with family I had to go along with it.
After Senior Frog’s we went back to the ship, since I was feeling better thanks to the Sea-Band I was able to enjoy cocktails on the ship, see the show before it closed and before dinner. That night I felt fine and enjoyed our dinner which included eating any signature apps they had on board to make up for lost time. I still wasn’t knocked off my feet with the desserts but it was nice to make it through the entire day and night on and off the ship. I was full of energy that night so enjoyed the casino on board a bit but I missed out on the dance parties, karaoke and other activities my family participated on board due to being sick. I have no regrets because the week before was packed and busy so I think my body needed it.
I definitely had a great time minus being a bit underwhelmed by lunch and dinner since my favorite meal was breakfast. I loved relaxing on Coco Cay, drinking top shelf cocktails, exploring Nassau and spending time with my family. Next time I go on a cruise I will be sure to take motion sickness medicine so I can enjoy it the whole time.
Have you been on a cruise? Did you like it? What cruise ship did you take?
Cheers to many more travels & beating my motion sickness!
