Empanada Guy started off with Food Trucks. I know, I was in line when he was at The Food Truck Wars this year at Monmouth Park, NJ. There are 2 Empanada Guy trucks and a 3rd on the way.
When I heard there was a restaurant in Freehold so close to my home, I had to go. The location has lots of parking as it is in a strip mall. You also can’t miss the distinctive red Empanada Guy sign. Once inside, the menu is on a TV rotating with pictures and easy to read. I had a game plan for this visit. We started with a chicken and a beef empanada as our appetizer. One bite and you can tell these are made with the freshest ingredients. Each one was full of ingredients, no skimping here. They also had hot sauce to dip them in or put on top. The sauce was typical of Spanish hot sauce, vinegary , not super-hot. Great stuff!
For our main meal we split two more items. I ordered the Cuban sandwich and my companion ordered one of the Specials for the day, shrimp and scallops over rice. The Cuban sandwich was perfect. Fresh ham, roasted pork, melty cheese and the mustard and pickle that makes it what it is. It is obvious Empanada Guy knows his stuff. I admit we fought, just a little, over the shrimp and scallop dish. The rice was done just right, the shrimp and scallops too, and that sauce…might just need a container of that to put over anything I have at home.
Well, by then we were pretty full, but the apple cinnamon empanadas could not go ignored. So we had one and took a few home. And of course, no meal would be complete without homemade flan. This was a dense intense carmel flavor and the sauce to sop it up with. What a great way to end a meal!
Empanada Guy, we’ll be back.
SCBD POV: Get excited, Empanada Guy has a restaurant in Freehold, NJ now. I am sucker
for good Spanish and Latin American driven food being that I am half Colombian. Empanada Guy brings you just that from a variety of homemade empanadas to beef stew. The food is made to order so it takes some time but it is completely worth it. The empanadas are pretty big but my beef empanada was gone before I knew it. I opted for the beef stew which was a special for my meal and it was delicious. I’m craving it already, it’s definitely a destination for Hispanic Comfort food in the area! It’s also a BYOB so feel free to bring your Sangria or Corona’s with you!
