Because I have an amazing cook for a mother, I don’t go out to eat often. When I do, I have some regular places that I enjoy going to and one of those is Matt’s Red Rooster Grill in Flemington, NJ. I have eaten here many times and have always had an amazing and delicious meal. My birthday is this month and for being a part of the mailing list for the restaurant, I receive a free dessert any day in the month of July. Of course I jumped on this opportunity to enjoy a nice meal with my mother.

The restaurant is BYOB which I love because then the focus is on the food. Sometimes there are specialty menus offered such as the pork roll meal I had one night complete with appetizer, entrée, and yes dessert, all with pork roll in them. If you are in the Flemington area, I highly recommend being a part of their email list because they send them out every month about any special menus or entrees offered. For example, I once had a special seafood entrée that was delicious and some fresh king crab legs to start.

While enjoying some Sauvignon Blanc and waiting for appetizers, we received some nice warm bread with the amazing green apple balsamic. If you ask them for the recipe they gladly give you a card with the details and it really is amazing. I am not always a huge fan of the oils and such for the pre-meal bread, but I will always have a couple pieces for this. It is sweet and light with that kick from the balsamic, a great combination and something that is not usually seen at a restaurant.

This time around there was no specialty menu but plenty of delicious items to choose from. For an appetizer I had the Tuna and Avocado Tartare with some crispy wontons and a delicious sauce. The portion was perfect and the combination of flavor and texture was amazing. I am a big stickler on texture and the small pieces of tuna combined with some soft avocado was fresh and delicious, especially on a hot night.

For my entrée I chose one of the specials for the evening which was Grilled Scallops with a local basil pesto sauce. Once again my perfectly portioned meal came to me with plenty of vegetables and couscous on the side. I could taste the char from the grill on the scallops and the sides were cooked perfectly. My mother chose the Tilapia entrée, also grilled with the same sides as myself.

Because I was using my free July birthday dessert, of course I had to have some! Out of this menu full of great options, I decided on the Peanut Butter Bomb complete with a nice crunchy cracker on the bottom and creamy soft peanut butter inside of a chocolate shell. I have had other desserts such as the Key Lime Tart, I highly recommend that as well! It paired well with my cappuccino and was a great ending to an amazing meal. Though it wasn’t my birthday, I did appreciate the added touch to my plate for dessert complete with a candle!

I highly recommend this restaurant if you are ever in the Flemington area. If you want to be around for the action in the kitchen, I suggest requesting the first floor when you make your reservations. There are even some seats at a bar right in front of the open kitchen! If you want something more open and quiet, there is always plenty of room on the second floor. There is an Italian restaurant with the same owners called Gallo Rosso (Red Rooster in Italian). While I have not tried Gallo Rosso yet, if it is anything like Matt’s Red Rooster Grill it will not disappoint!
